I reached for it, the cool beads sliding between my fingers as I whispered the only thing I could manage… “Father, forgive me.” The words came out rough, strangled, like I was forcing them through the ache in my throat. “I’ve allowed temptation to live in my thoughts,” I breathed. “I let the devil take hold of my weakness. I let him turn something innocent into sin.” My voice cracked. I squeezed my eyes shut, shame burning through me. “She’s not evil,” I whispered, shaking my head. “But the way I looked at her… the way I touched her… that wasn’t of God. That was me. That was flesh. That was weakness.”

I whispered into the darkness of the room, the words a silent vow I would renew every single morning for the rest of my life. ​I wasn't a good man. I was under no illusions about my soul. The things I had done in London, the blood I had spilled on that white quartz floor, the lives I had systematically ruined to build this sanctuary—they were sins that would follow me to the grave and beyond.
