He pressed his forehead to mine, shaking, crying, clutching me like I was the only thing keeping him grounded. Another quake hit. The ground tore open further. The city seemed to fold inward like a collapsing card tower. The sky dimmed into a dying glow. I could feel the world pulling at us, tugging at our edges like we were becoming part of the glitch. And then the system voice returned, louder, colder, final. “Ten seconds remaining.”

Chapter 45: The City That Starts to Sink Valenfort was no longer just shaking. It was sinking. Not like a normal collapse where buildings fall and dust rises, but something deeper. The entire city felt like it was slowly being pulled downward, as if the ground itself had turned into water. Evelyn stood on broken stone, breathing heavily. Her sword, Hallowed Reaver, was still in her hand, but her arms felt heavier than before. The red cracks under the city kept expanding, forming shapes that looked too organized to be random.

What wish would possibly fix this shit heap? “I – I wish that Rose was never born a Fallen.” I said, hoping I don’t regret this decision. “Hmm. Interesting choice. Very well.” Gabriel said before clapping dramatically. I felt my body free fall, and everything turned black.

Killian hissed, his voice regaining its sharp, tactical focus as he leaned out over the drop, ignoring the dizzying height. High above the tip of the spire, where the upside-down city met the solid stone ceiling of our citadel's floorboards, three massive, black-iron rings were slowly uncoupling. With every sharp clack of a giant locking tooth sliding back, the ceiling above us—the very floor of our high hall, where three hundred of our people were still being evacuated—settled down by half an inch. If the inverted spire dropped its weight completely, it wouldn't just tear itself free. It would drag the foundation of the Northern Citadel down into the abyss along with it.

The driver started to load the things Jace had in the trunk. Hardy's three wolves watched the city below them with blazing eyes on the roof of one of the buildings not far from the station. Benjamin was not far from the three Hardy brothers, standing at the end of the building's roof barrier. His hair, face, and coat were swept away by the strong wind. He looked down at the bustling streets of Haridra City below. "I really miss the atmosphere of this city." Ben smiled widely. In the next second, Ben jumps off the roof of the building and floats down like someone who is about to fall.

I pleaded in a shaky voice, my knees suddenly felt weak, so I sat down, not minding that people were passing by and watching me. "Your mom collapsed and when the doctors examined her, they said she was getting worse and she had just a few weeks-" I didn't listen to the rest of what he had to say. I ran down the staircase as my chest tightened. I swallowed the lump in my throat as I kept pushing through the wind, running as fast as my little legs could carry me. Tears kept falling from my eyes but I didn't bother to clean them.

Felicity stuck her tongue out, and they both giggled. As Layla turned back to the party, Felicity slipped into the sanctuary and relative quiet of the dark bedroom. Her breath caught as she took in the view of the city through the tall windows. The skyline of downtown Chicago was a man-made mountain range of lights twinkling in a sea of black. The sky behind the buildings was a soft purple, cutting a contrast against the silhouettes of the buildings. It was one amazing view, and it always made her breathless when she caught a glimpse of the monolithic buildings. Her hands ached to sketch the sight, but she hadn't brought her pad with her.

Unable to withstand the blow, James plummeted from the sky and crashed into the ground. Boom! His fall made a loud sound. The ground was extremely sturdy. It was undamaged, even though James crashed into it with great force. James staggered back up from the ground. Mia rushed over and asked. “What happened, Mr. Caden?” James raised his head and said solemnly, “I tried to fly over the gate but a terrifying force from within the city struck me down.” Herbert immediately stood up and volunteered. “I’ll give it a go.”

Caitlin felt them slow, and then begin to descend. She opened her eyes. She didn’t recognize any of the buildings below them. It appeared that they were way uptown. Possibly, the Bronx somewhere. As they descended, they flew over a small park, and in the distance, she thought she saw a castle. As they got closer, she realized that it definitely was a castle. What was a castle doing here, in New York City?

His wings still out, tensed, and ready, the rest of us holding our weapons. He moved so fast I didn’t even see him. Sliding past the others as fluid as water going around rocks in a stream he came for me, I felt his arm snag my waist and my feet left the Earth. I heard Devon’s shots fire and Kenneth soared into the air in pursuit. Cassi let out a scream and I heard the others calling my name as we ascended, until they were just specks. Kenneth closing in, aiming his crossbow at Shamshiel’s wings, his purple wings beating as he tried desperately to keep up, his face contorted in anguish as he realized he would not be able to help me.
