Then I sighed. With a small flick of my wrist, the earth trembled beneath her. Roots slithered aside as soil loosened and parted, forming a hollow grave. The ground accepted her silently, swallowing her whole. When it closed again, there was no trace of her—no blood, no struggle, no witness. I reverted my attention to the vampire, who stood a few paces away, licking the last of her blood from his lips. His smirk was sharp, fear slipping away–or pretending to, the kind only creatures like him could wear—half mockery, half hunger.

She crawled back to her car and reached for her silver knuckles in the center console. She whipped around just in time as the female vampire lunged at her. Claire’s fist collided with the cheekbone and she landed another blow into the torso of the vampire. She doubled over and Claire kicked her right in the face, knocking her backwards. The vampire took a few steps and then collapsed to the ground in a heap. Without missing a beat, the other vampires turned their attention to Claire and the vampire on the ground. They both glared at her with their predatory eyes, slowly stalking towards her.

Carissa waited for a few more minutes, waiting for that bossy commander to go back to his camps before she made her move. She climbed down as silent as the night as she focused her senses on her surroundings. She heard two pairs of footsteps on her left and one on her right. Smiling, her eyes flashed with an eerie excitement. Time to hunt some souls! She moved towards her right and watched as the vampire scanned his surroundings with his back to her. Carissa moved from the trees by stepping on the branch. At the same time, the rain pours down adding a glee to Carissa’s excitement. She flicked her fingers and watched as the vampire touched his neck before he fell.

Around her, the green magic grows as her fingertips stretch towards the ground below, and flares wildly in arcs and snaps so bright those of us watching shield our eyes against it. Shifting, I watch as from deep inside the earth, liquid crystal flows upward, covering the vampire’s gemstone cage. Seeping in, it fills, imprisoning him like something trapped in amber, cutting off his silent screams and weak thrashing. A subterranean rumble shakes the plaza, knocking me and those around me off our feet, and I scramble backwards from the edge of the crater. “Get back! Tessa! Get back!”

AMELIA I was drunk on adrenaline, on that strong heady feeling I was beginning to learn all vampires felt when they were thirsty. I was drunk on instincts – vampire instincts. Everything seemed clearer now, better. The world was such a beautiful place, Earth was beautiful. I could feel gravity, in a way that was really chill. Why did everyone have only bad things to say about gravity? Gravity was awesome, that groundedness – if there was even such a word. My movements were quicker as my hunger led to my target.

I looked at the others, giving them a stiff nod before I followed down. The fall was about three hundred meters long but that was no problem when you were a vampire. It was like jumping and landing from three meters of height.

I widened my eyes at him, but his expressionless face did not change, so I just went back to cleaning and scrubbing. "You tied up your hair," he commented, and I nodded. "Yes, I did since it's hot here, and I'm cleaning right now," I replied. Then, he suddenly grabbed my shoulders and looked straight into my eyes. "Don't move," he commanded, and at that same time, I could not control my body anymore except my eyes. Is this one of his powers as a vampire? I can't move my body at all! But I can't let him drink my blood again! I'm already at my limit and haven't recovered yet! So I tried to move again, but still couldn't

I've also learned the embarrassing way that Vampires still have gag reflexes. He gripped my head fiercely. "Damn, baby. How do you do that so good?" He flexed his pelvis rhythmically against me. I knew it took a lot of control for him not to pump wildly into my mouth. I think it made him come even harder because he had to be so careful not to hurt me. He threw his head back and growled like something you'd never heard this side of earth. It was a sound that belonged completely in the spirit world.

He spotted me, hissed, and came right for me. I scrambled down the ladder, taking them two rungs at a time, but it wasn’t fast enough. He landed on top of me, and we both started falling. As I fell through the air, I braced myself for the impact. Luckily, we landed in water. As I rose, I saw I was in up to my waist in filthy, sewage water. I had barely time to think when the vampire landed beside me with a splash. With one motion, he wound back and backhanded me across the face, sending me flying several feet.

I knew I had made mistakes, said things I shouldn't have. But, I also knew Eleanor. I knew how much we loved each other. She wouldn't give up on me so easily. Right? She wouldn't... Right? My legs had refused to hold my body together any longer. As I came crashing down to the ground, my body trembling at the thought of the probabilities running in my head. "You look so weak right now." The First Vampire? My head snapped in the direction of the voice as I found the owner of the voice sitting right beside me, leaving me startled for a moment.
