I sip my drink lightly, and my eyes nearly water—the burning liquid hugs my throat like hot coals, sliding to my stomach like bile. After twenty minutes, Sam’s face is blurred, Mark’s laughter echoes in my ears, and I feel a delicious happiness slipping between my teeth, my reddened eyes. “I’ll put on music,” Sam shouts, dragging the words firmly, standing and walking confidently toward the huge speakers. “Let’s play, forget the cards in the game,” Mark interrupts, looking up. “One question for the winner and a challenge for the loser,” he adds, firm but imprecise. “My turn.”

I muttered. But she wasn’t wrong. The two of them together were… well, infuriating. Smooth passes, sharp moves, the crowd hanging on every second. And of course, every time Ryder pushed his hair back or Liam adjusted his grip, half the bleachers screamed like they’d just been proposed to. By the time the whistle blew for halftime, I was already exhausted and I hadn’t even moved. The players jogged to the side, sweat dripping, and Mila nudged me with her elbow.

From what Preston said, by the time halftime rolled around, we had a pretty decent chance of winning if we pulled off the defense well. I was far too impatient for halftime to end. I wanted to see Adam again, but he was in the lockers, getting ready for the second half of the game. “Wow,” Avery said after a moment. “I mean, I’m still not a fan, but I get why people go crazy over this. There is no way he likes me. Holiday has the ball and they are making it count. Our defense can't seem to keep them from getting their ten yards and before we know it they have driven 83 yards down the field and scored a rushing touchdown. I groan as their band plays their school fight song. For the next thirty five minutes we watch both teams battle and score. The offenses on both sides, are tough. The defenses are having a hard time so the game is a high scorer. When half time arrives, I stay in my seat, no bathroom for me. Everyone heads to the restrooms or refreshments besides Mr. Ryan and me. Which is a little on the awkward side, but I focus on the halftime
