“Now rise, rotten apple, and let us be rid of you.” Above her, the neon glowed red, the color more sunset than shocking crimson in the rain-slicked sidewalk at her feet. Across the street, the door to Eidolon waited. The rain still fell, the drops so light they no longer pelted the thin plastic tied beneath her chin. And though she held the keys in hand, her home no less than fifty steps away, she stood, lost in a turbulent sea of raging ghosts and regretful memories.

He picked up his thermos and took a slow sip, but the look in his eyes was worse than any insult he could have thrown at me. That afternoon, I grabbed an empty sterile vial from the company medicine cabinet. When I got home that evening, Alice was cooking in the kitchen. The roar of the range hood drowned out everything else. I took the chance to slip into the bedroom and buried my face in the pillow, inhaling deeply. I couldn't smell anything. She claimed the scent was fading, but I couldn't catch even a hint of diesel. "Dinner's ready." Alice appeared in the doorway, her apron speckled with oil and her spatula still dripping with broth.

I took a sharp breath, and in an instant, an indescribable fragrance rushed into my nostrils. The short walk to her door felt like trekking through fire. Every step was a blur of excitement and agonizing tension. In the haze, I heard Demi whisper, "Sir, you're burning up." I licked my dry lips and grunted, "Pretty sure you're the one who's burning. You're rubbing off on me." Demi let out a faint chuckle and retorted, "No, it's definitely you…" As she spoke, her hand slipped inside the collar of my shirt.

“The house isn’t creepy.” “Yes, it is,” Owen and Caroline said in unison. Ben dipped his roller back into the paint tray. “It has character.” Caroline hopped down from the stool and wiped paint from her hands. A streak of green smeared across her forehead. “This house has the same amount of character as Amityville.” Ben laughed and stepped closer, lifting the hem of his shirt to wipe the paint from her skin. “My house is not haunted. It just needs some attention.”

The floors were polished marble, and the walls were decorated with photographs of beaches, mountains, and fancy events that looked like scenes from old Hollywood. There was a faint smell of fresh flowers — roses, maybe — drifting from somewhere deeper inside. I swallowed hard. “I think this house is bigger than my entire life.” Adeline snorted. “Come on. Let me show you around before you get dramatic.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me through a hallway that looked like it belonged in a museum. “This is Adrian’s room,” she said as we passed a door on the left. “Don’t enter unless you want to die. He hates people touching his stuff.”

But why the hell did I feel so damn under her spell right now? "Come to me, Killian," Adeline said as she went on her knees. And my legs walked to her before my brain could think. I stopped before her, running my fingers through her silky purple hair. She was perfection. "I love you, Mama." Adeline opened my zipper and took my shaft into her mouth, and the galaxy exploded behind my eyes. Somewhere in between her suction and gurgles, she responded a muffled 'I love you too'. We were supposed to be with family, having dinners and playing games. But here we were— in the place where we'd share many first happy memories together, just to recreate the naughty parts. We were the host of the dinner,

And now… “Wait.” Adeline’s voice cut through my subconscious, and I find myself peering to the outside world for the first time through her eyes. “What is it?” I asked, observing our surroundings with all my senses. “Something’s wrong.” She muttered, glancing in every direction where we stopped in the middle of the forest. Adeline waited, for a moment, and when we finally heard the sound of rustling leaves and snapping branches, our hackles lifted, eyes on full alert as she lowered her mouth to the ground.
