Then he sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. “You didn’t,” he said finally. “It just shouldn’t have happened.” I felt something sharp inside me twist and break. “Shouldn’t have happened?” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. He stood, straightening his shirt like he needed something to do with his hands. “It was a mistake, Althea. You know that.”
