MINTHE Pick You Up * * * The Great Hall is suffocatingly loud by mid-afternoon. The heat from two massive roaring hearths hits my face, carrying the scent of roasted meat, cheap ale, and the heavy, earthy musk of ninety pack warriors packed into wooden benches.

Cora looked all around her in amusement, suddenly feeling self conscious that almost everyone else was in uniform. The great hall was larger than any other hall she had ever been in. It was old and musty and ancient and comfortably housed over a hundred students in it. It had ancient murals on every side of the walls that told the story of the werewolf history. The ceiling was a large dome of ancient drawings and glittering magical stars. It was magic. Magic kept it alive. The whole academy was spun from magic, from the very first Lycan mages. A chandelier hung from the ceiling like the bejewelled corpse of a giant spider. It was old, grim and haunting to Cora.

I watched as the wolf ran down the almost deserted hallway. A voice that I recognized as Mister Wilkin's, the school principal, blared through the school speakers. "All students are to assemble in the Great Hall for their protection. All the teachers should follow suit. Do not worry, we are still protected by the ward made by the Elder Witches themselves." After the speaker went quiet, I ushered a trembling Lenda out of the room towards the Great Hall. We were the only ones out now, which meant everyone else was in the Hall. Shit.

The first time Lyra escaped the phrontistery at Crescent Pack shealmost got lost. A phrontistery was a place where high ranked young werewolves schooled. There was only seven phrontistery in the world. One located in each continent. Lyra’s pack, the Moonstone pack, was situated in West Virginia, United States, North America. The Crescent Pack was the pack in North America that had a phrontistery. It was located in New York, United States, North America.

Aiden murmured, “Weakness and fear is exactly what the High Council feeds on.” Then he opened the office door. The corridors outside were already filled with moving students. Guards lined the walls. The academy felt transformed, like war was approaching quietly. Aiden stepped out first. I followed behind him mechanically, my pulse hammering harder with every step. The Grand Central Hall looked even worse this time. Thousands of students filled the massive chamber now. At the center of the hall stood something new that wasn't there earlier… a massive black stone pedestal. Ancient symbols glowed faintly across its surface. I guessed it was the relic Aiden told me about. Even from where I stood

Aria's POV The Great Hall was never meant for this. Its high, vaulted ceiling, carved with scenes of noble hunts and first moon ceremonies, now looked down on a scene of grisly, gasping reality. The long tables, where initiates had shared meals and stories, were shoved against the walls. In their place, on the cold flagstone floor, lay the wounded.

His jaw flexed, but I caught the hint of a smirk before he smoothed it out. “Remind me to double your office security.” “Remind me to fire whoever trained her.” That got a low hum of amusement out of him. The elevator dinged at the top floor. The doors slid open into the executive wing, the one I used to visit as a girl. Everything looked the same. Polished floors, sharp corners, the Ravenwood emblem etched faintly into the walls, but the light was colder now. Less golden, more glass. Cassian’s hand hovered at my back again, but this time he didn’t touch me.

Some people were blessed with good genetics, but Varul had robbed the gods. His amber eyes swept over me and his expression softened a fraction. “Beautiful,” he murmured, and my traitorous cheeks warmed. Rude. My own body had become a collaborator. He offered me his arm and I took it. Then we left for the Great Hall. I’d never been in the Great Hall before—a testament to how huge the castle was. The hall itself was enormous. Like cathedral-meets-Viking-longhouse enormous. Massive pillars rose toward shadowed ceilings. Great hearths burned along the walls, filling the air with warmth and the scent of cedar and roasting meat. Long tables stretched across the chamber. Banners hung overhead.

I said. She shook her head and underlined what she'd written. The great hall was full. I had not seen this part of the estate used before, it was vast, with ceilings that disappeared into shadow and walls hung with the kind of tapestries that told stories I didn't yet know, and it was full of people. Pack members from the estate and from the surrounding territories, filling the space with a low, collective energy that shifted the moment Draco appeared.

I could almost hear Lucas's voice in my head, telling me to raise my head. I did, surreptitiously taking in the details of the room. It was rightly called the Great Hall, I thought. Much like the guards before, the room was decorated in rich tones of red and gold. Strategic tables with the same rich red tablecloths were placed at the corners of the room, piled high with small finger foods and desserts, even a champagne fountain. The room was pleasantly cool, no doubt alleviated by the fact that the ceilings were indeed very far up, with high beams, and slowly rotating fans adding to the feeling of hypnosis.
