The moment I reached Emily’s door, I pushed it open without knocking.
She was sitting on the bed, her left arm wrapped in clean bandages. Her face was pale, and there were faint red marks along her neck and shoulder. Mrs. Higgins sat beside her, gently pressing a cold cloth against one of the burns.
The sight made something inside me snap.
“Emily,” I breathed, stepping closer. “Are you okay?”
She looked up, startled. Her lips parted, but no sound came out at first.
“I’m fine,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper.
