Pale, untouched, no trace of what I had burned into memory.
Nothing.
I felt my breath tighten in my throat. My fists curled where they rested at my sides.
By then the maid had returned, panting, clutching a small wooden box in her hands. She reached Natasha quickly, bowing and apologizing still as she led her toward one of the side rooms off the corridor. “Please, come in here, my lady, let me help you. I beg you, please forgive me.”
Natasha did not protest. She followed quietly, though her steps were slow, deliberate, her dignity held even in discomfort. The door closed behind them, sealing the hall into silence again.
