Her loud cries of displeasure, and her flashes of anger. A declaration against this world, and all the injustices of it.

I heard Martha cry from the other end of the phone. "It's okay, don't cry." I tried to get Martha to stop crying. "Okay, I won't cry again." "Martha I am in a deep load of trouble." "What happened? "Martha sounded concerned. "Do you remember a day when I was arguing with a man at the store, he said I talked too much." I tried to refresh Martha's memory. "Yeah I remember, what about him?" Martha asked. "He is prince Rodriguez Astley, I met him today."

“Be the storm, babe. Not the shelter.” She flagged down a cab, the wind catching her hair like some cinematic goddess. As she stepped off the curb, she tossed a wink over her shoulder. “See you, hottie. Don’t forget—Billing!” Then she was gone, sliding into the cab like she hadn’t just handed me the most unhinged advice of my life. I stood there, eyes wide, brain reeling. “Be the storm,” I muttered. “Right.” When I got home, I stood at the door for a second like I was about to walk into war.

I was the storm they couldn’t see coming. And I would burn it all down before I let them take this from me.

He didn’t reply. Outside, the wind began to pick up, the sky bruising with gray. Her heart thudded uneasily. She hated storms. She always had. But tonight the thunder didn’t just scare her it called something out of her. The rain started again, soft at first, then harder, until it sounded like the world was shaking.
