he said briefly. Paul and Frankie seemed fascinated by Jane, hanging on her every word while we waited. It was starting to get on my nerves. We went into the theater. The two girls sat in the middle, Brian and I next to them, with Frankie and Paul on the ends. The movie wasn’t bad. A space-travel story where the heroes land on a deserted planet, only to discover that they’re receiving messages from their future selves—and that their own virus had wiped them out. It had everything: intrigue, action, and romance.

They occasionally show crowd-pleasers, and apparently Eastern Promises was one of them… although it fit comfortably into the ‘independent’ category, as well. It was awesome. Dark and brutal and sad in places, but romantic and awesome overall. Viggo Mortenson’s ass wasn’t half bad, either. Although it paled in comparison to Derek Kane’s… which I hadn’t even seen naked yet. And I’m never, ever GOING to, I told myself firmly as I walked out of the movie theater, trying to keep my eyes off his rear end. “You hungry?” he asked me as we walked out into the purple-skied dusk.

“I thought it was a great book, creepy and atmospheric. The movie adaptation, on the other hand . . . that was a real stinker.” “I thought it turned out okay, all things considered.” The young man tilted his head and gave Brad a skeptical look. “You’re just trying to be all diplomatic, but you have to admit they really dumbed down your story. Even the title change to Shadow Monsters was dreadful; sounds like something they’d air on SyFy after the latest Sharknado.” Brad tried to hold a neutral expression, but he couldn’t keep the corners of his lips from curling. “Well, the check cleared, I’ll say that much.”

It was Saturday so families were around, it was mid afternoon and they'd been led to a table that had an outdoor view. They had seafood and pasta before finally heading to Ikeja city Mall's cinema where they watched whiplash. "Oh Allah that was the best movie I've ever watched and I'll ever watch." Amirah said as they trudged out of the cinema, it was early evening. "What did you think about Fletcher? I actually think he was an asshole." Muhammad said as they stood on queue in front of an icecream stand. "I don't really know about that, I think he had good intentions though." Amirah said.

We settled onto the enormous sofa, Alexander's arm draped casually over my shoulders. The movie was gloriously awful. The special effects looked like they'd been done on someone's laptop, and the acting was so wooden I suspected the performers might actually be trees in disguise. "Oh my god," I gasped as the lead actress ran from CGI bees in four-inch heels. "Who runs from killer insects in stilettos?"

They’re dead.” She seemed to be on the verge of tears when I didn’t like the film as much as she wanted me to. “Look, Elaine.” I reached for her hands. She pulled them from me at first but they eventually sought my warmth. “The movie is cool, at least not for us. The author have a brilliant mind—” “Her name is Stephenie Meyer,” she chirped. “Stephenie has a brilliant idea but it just doesn't resonate with us. It doesn’t resonate with the real-life folks that the creatures are based on but the movie looks good, I guess.”

I love human creativity and how they romanticize almost everything. "Shall we check out other cinemas?" I asked. "Yes. I don't like vampires," he grumbled. "Haha. Okay. Do you want it to be a werewolf romance then?" "Of course!" he honestly replied. He then made a fake cough, as it was too late to get flustered. "Ahem! What I mean—it's better." "Okay. I thought so too." I chuckled. We checked out two more cinemas before we ended up picking the same vampire movie we saw at the first cinema we checked out. Winston was against watching vampire movies, but it's the only decent one among the others, so we actually have no option.

I rested comfortably against Zephyr’s shoulder, my legs tucked beneath the blanket as I stared at the screen. “You know,” I said after a while, a smile tugging at my lips, “there’s something that’s always bothered me about movies like this.” Zephyr took a sip of soda and glanced down at me. “What now?” I pointed toward the television. “This whole werewolf versus vampire thing.” One of his eyebrows rose. “What about it?” “We always get the short end of the stick.” I sat up slightly, getting more invested in my complaint the longer I talked. “Every movie makes vampires look superior. They’re stronger, smarter, more elegant, and apparently impossible to kill.”

Opal leaned back and raised the footrest to her chair, unfolding her legs out in front of her. "I actually liked this movie. There were no cringy scenes like in Ginger Snaps, and in the 'dead' Twilight series. The CGI was on par, and they used beautiful actors/actresses for the characters." She perched up, her eyes flashing to me in acknowledgement of what I witnessed with Su. "You ask us a lot, but here's a question for you." Opal directed it towards Su, catching her off guard. "Are all werewolves gorgeous in their human forms?" She challenged.
