I know that voice instantly. Lucas. My chest tightens painfully. “She needs you,” he continues, and I hear the slight shake in his voice now. “We love you. We would never hurt you or her. We are your brothers.” A weak, broken smile pulls at my mouth before I can stop it. Lucas. My little brother. I remember him small enough to fit against my chest while I carried him through the woods. I remember sitting beside his bed during storms because thunder terrified him when he was young. I remember rocking him back and forth when nightmares woke him crying in the middle of the night.

I have an older brother who protects me, and I have a younger brother who is on my side. In fact, the world is not always evil to me.

Don't get me wrong, I have always loved my little brother Sammy. He was always just sort of, I don't know, a dork. I think that she came out of the womb with a certain social awkwardness and a unique ability to make himself invisible in plain sight. Sammy is a total nerd and always has been. I am not saying that to put him down. Like I said, I really do love my little brother. We never had that sort of torturous older sister/younger brother thing that you see on television and movies.
