The rain had started sometime in the afternoon, light at first—a gentle mist swirling through the courtyards and clinging to the stone towers of the palace.
But by evening, it had turned into a relentless downpour, soaking the world in grey.
I stood by the balcony window, arms wrapped tightly around myself, watching the storm rage across the darkened fields.
Every few minutes, I would glance toward the distant gates, hoping, praying, desperate for the first glimpse of a rider emerging through the curtain of rain.
