I didn't say anything. He smiled and we both drifted off into sleep…..

“You’ve been out a lot lately.” “Is that a problem?” I snapped, more defensive than I intended. “No,” he said quickly. “I just… I miss you.” I swear I heard his voice broke around the end of the statement. The words caught me off guard, hitting me like a soft punch to the chest. My heart skipped a beat and for a moment, I didn’t know what to say. I miss you too, I swear, I do… I wanted to say it, I so badly wanted to tell him how much I miss him too. But before I could respond, the line went dead.

I ask him as I sigh loudly. “Man, I am going to miss you.” He says, almost to himself before he goes back to his work.

“Or at least—it used to be.” Something unspoken hung between us. I thought of him out there alone, missing shot after shot. Of the frustration I’d heard in his voice earlier. Of the way his hands had shaken, just slightly, when he lowered the gun. “You were off tonight,” I said before I could stop myself. He stilled. “What?” “You missed,” I said. “Multiple times.” His eyes darkened. “You noticed.” “I did.” Silence stretched between us, thick and fragile.

I reply. He meets my eyes then. “You think so?” he asks. “I know so,” I say. Something shifts in his expression. “I missed a lot,” he says quietly. My chest tightens slightly I know what he means. “I know,” I say softly. He nods once then “I’m not missing anything else,” he adds. And I believe him that’s the part that surprises me I don’t question it I don’t doubt it I just believe him. Eli squirms slightly, letting out a small fussing sound.

It was almost like he was crying. "I yelled back." I chuckled. "I can handle it, remember, I promise." We continue to hold each other. Before I spoke again. "I miss our bed." I sighed. "I miss you in our bed." He chuckled, I let go of him and smack his arm at his reply.

No shit His face lighted up, his eyes boring on mine as he strolled down. I braced myself up for it, my face hard. "I'm not interested, Jordan." I told him before he could he even say anything. He sighed, pulling a seat. "I know. You already made that clear." Then why was he still seated? I raised my eyebrow at him. "But Eva, I - I can't -" He paused, his eyes dull as he stared into mine. "I miss you."

I decided not to inform him so I could surprise him. "I missed you" He suddenly blurted. Okay, I wasn't expecting him to say that. We talked on the phone last night and suddenly, sounding this way is just surprising... Silly man! "I missed you so much Chloe" he added again. "Someone has really missed me so much, isn't it?" I teased him. "I do and I wish I was there with you right now. Plus, you sounded tired." He chuckled as he said that. "You can say that again"

Sighing, I looked up to the sky. “I missed this,” I said out loud. “I didn't think that I'll miss this, it barely crossed my mind in the city. Yet now that I'm here, I know I missed it.” “Weird, right?” I chuckled, turning to him to find him looking at me with a thoughtful look. I watched him swallow before looking forward. "Yeah.” After a pause, he spoke again. “I missed you a lot.” I looked at him immediately, seeing a desolate look on his face.
