The wail of the ambulance siren faded into the distance. Rain lashed against Emma's pale face, mixing with her tears. She stood on the cold concrete outside the villa, her fingertips still stained with the sticky memory of Wesley's blood. A blinding beam of headlights cut through the downpour, and a black Maybach screeched to a halt before her. Zachary leaped out, not even bothering with an umbrella. I wanted to step back outside, go to him, press my body against his again, lose myself in that connection. I pressed my hand against the glass, grounding myself, fighting the urge to move. His hand mirrored mine, rain streaming down his face as he stared directly at me. The storm continued to rage, wind howling, rain pelting down, yet neither of us moved. We simply looked at each other, as if the world outside had vanished, leaving only the storm inside us.
