Then she stopped. Through the quiet rustling, I thought I heard her calling my name. “Mariah, where are you? I’m so scared...” My mom had always been afraid of the dark. I grew up in a single-parent household so to support me, my mom often worked late into the night. I always waited for her at the end of a long alley, eager to escort her home. By holding my hand, she always found the courage to step into the darkness. She also suffered from claustrophobia.

I could feel my flesh burning and I winced in pain. “Stop running. You’re only going to suffer more,” he said as he entered the broken door. I ignored what he said and continued climbing up the stairs. It only took me a couple of seconds before I reached the line of tables in the very middle. The entire library was not in total darkness because of the light slipping through the glass windows from the outside. I ran to the east wing and hid behind the tall shelves while catching up my breath. The werewolf’s footsteps echoed in the air.

I mumbled softly to myself as I entered my office and slammed the door shut. I made a beeline for the reserved section of the bookshelf which held all the information I had gathered on the Shadow wolf during my travels across the world. I had been through these books countless times in the past, but it was no surprise that I may have skipped over the parts about mates, since I was sure I’d never have one. Well played Mother Selene! Four hours later I gazed at the back cover of each and every book and scroll that I had about the Shadow wolf and much to my dismay, not a single one spoke even a word about mates.
