The monsters were as tall as the trees in the forest. Their arms were so long they used them to walk along with their two legs, like the gorillaens I had once seen in the zoo back at Coven Community.

What the actual fuck? “You look rich. How were the monsters able to get you?” The woman holding a baby asked. The monsters were the wolves, the rogues to be precise. I was still looking around confused when the woman spoke again. “I didn’t know they go for the wealthy too. Were you the only one taken?” I looked at her “My home was attacked and I was the only one taken” I simply answered, knowing I couldn’t tell her the exact truth. “That’s sad. Where is your home?”

But instead of apologizing, her sister got to her feet and repeated the words that had sent her mind reeling. “Aurora, there are no monsters. A long time ago Stefan told me that when the tribe came into our village and you saw your parents killed you were beyond upset. He said you made up some wild story about monsters, maybe to make everything seem less real. He said you believed the story for so long that by the time you grew up, you could no longer tell what was real and what wasn’t. But it wasn’t real Aurora. There were no monsters. Another tribe killed all of our parents, that’s all.” Aurora grabbed at the dresser just to keep herself from falling. “No, I saw them with my own eyes.”

Their eyes met, and finally the silence broke between them. "What is it you want to say?" Mark asked gently, his gaze sincere, making Julie swallow hard as she remembered her current situation—single, with her partner in prison. If Liam truly was the perpetrator, then there was no hope for her future with him. The look that Mark had, which was directed at Julie, immediately made the girl forget that she promised Liam to fix everything. "Elizah keeps screaming hysterically whenever she hears or mentions the word 'monsters.' I take it that 'monsters' is plural, meaning more than one person committed this crime against her," Julie said, her voice calmer than before.

Yet that’s what they were doing. The deeper we went, the stranger it got. Ancient murals covered the walls. Some showed giant wolves battling horrors. Others showed queens and alphas under silver moons. Then I noticed something wrong. The monsters were in the carvings too. Not as enemies. As allies. My steps slowed. No. The first monsters were evil. Weren’t they? The giant wolf glanced back, sensing my confusion. His smile returned. “You’ve been lied to, Little Moon.” Chills ran through me. Nobody spoke, because deep down we all feared he was right.

I was terrified of them, but God, I was already craving the way they took me. I was a couple of days away from being their captive, and I was already drowning in the need for their touch.

Only after realizing he was still unharmed did he let out a shaky breath of relief. "We were attacked by a group of giant monsters," he hurriedly explained. "We had no choice but to abandon our homeland." Oh? Ray's interest was immediately piqued. "What kind of monsters?" Mikkle began describing them while gesturing wildly, and Ray quickly understood.
