It was protecting its children from the zombie horde. Even zombies instinctively protected their offspring. And yet my own sister spent every waking moment plotting against me. After the session had concluded and they had filed out with the rest of the crowd, they stood on the leaf-littered sidewalk in the blinding sun. The three stood in a triangle. Wes extracted his printed movie schedule and held it in the center of their shape. “OK,” Wes said, placing his fingertip on the print, “we can do Scandinavian vampires, which is also showing again tomorrow. Or, we can do Canadian zombies. Looks like this is the only showing we can swing for zombies.”

She hoped if she were to die, it would not be like this, she thought, with fear clogging her throat.

She also had a thing for zombies, which was how the three of them connected and started chatting. She added fuel to a never-ending debate that Zeke and Trevor had for the longest time: Zeke with his distaste of the zombie subculture or with any silly import from the mother country versus Trevor's adoration of it. She was on Trevor's side and made their position more convincing. In the end, Zeke lost his stance on the zombie/Colony import debate but gained a new friend.

They are giving dad and uncle Mark a hard time. I move closer to where they are fighting, trying to get a good view of these new zombies. Like a zombie, she prepared a giant cup of coffee while they waited for Dad and Sara to arrive. Shaky hands brought the mug to her lips. Try as she might to steady herself, she couldn't seem to manage it. Randy joined her on the sofa, placed an arm across her shoulders and pulled her close. They sat in silence as she tried to mellow, the warmth of his embraced helped. "You need sleep, Sugar," Randy said, nudging her knowingly with his arm.
