Six hours before the draft, Marcus stopped breathing. I was in the safe house hallway when the machines screamed. I looked up at Jace, heart pounding hard. “It was just a friend from Uni” I muttered, trying to act normal but I was panicking inside. “I’m late for class Jace. I was gonna go.” Jace didn’t move. He just stood by the elevator, big and blocking the exit. His face went cold and his eyes narrowed as he stepped closer. “You’re not leaving today, Kale” Jace said low and calm, like it wasn’t even a question. “We need to go over the rules for your new life with me.”

The inside of the man's head was now filled with Jazlyn for no apparent reason. He should be happy that Jazlyn decided to leave after her mom's condition had completely improved and she could finally live a very normal life from now on. "Please," he cried out, his sight becoming fuzzy. "Please, just let her be safe." Everything around him started to spin like a dizzying ride, and he felt his consciousness beginning to break apart. But he fought to stay focused, determined not to let go until he knew his baby daughter was out of danger. Finally, with one last push, he whispered the final part of the incantation. In a bright flash of light, the baby vanished, leaving Draven all alone in the temple. He fell to the floor, his body shaking as blood continued to flow

Jace closed the door behind him slowly. Five minutes later, the excitement he’d come in with was gone.
