Kaden had just woken up from sleep because of the nightmare he had. A really bad one that made his heart race so fast and his chest constrict in fear. His breathing was loud and uneven, his body trembling with anxiety. He couldn’t even tell what exactly it was that was making him so uneasy.

I wake up with a violent start, my chest heaving as my eyes snap open. For a second, I just lie there, disoriented and confused, trying to understand why my body feels so tense, why my heart is hammering like something terrible has happened… And then it hits me and my eyes widen as the connection I made yesterday before I fell asleep crashes over me like an avalanche. The moment it sinks in, I sit up so fast the room spins around me. “Fuck,” I whisper breathlessly as I throw the blankets off and climb out of bed.

Darren awoke with a start, his heart racing as his mind immediately gravitated towards Lucy. Without wasting a single moment, he hastily threw off the covers and bounded out of bed, the urgency in his movements betraying his anxiety. He rushed down the hallway, his footsteps echoing through the quiet of the night, each beat of his heart echoing in his ears.

I kept on waiting and waiting that I eventually had fallen asleep. Around midnight, I was woken up needing to pee and through the darkness of the room, I was completely taken aback as soon as I felt something heavy on my side and was shocked to see a hand laced over my bump. The hand came from behind me since I was sleeping on my right and in a nanosecond, my heart was already beating fast inside my chest wondering who it could be.

Jayden climbed the bed, pull her into his arms and slept off. When Janet woke up in the morning, she felt sore. The alarm on her phone won't stop ringing. She tried to get up abruptly and felt a sharp pain in her head. "Ah!" She sat down and decided to take her time. When she noticed the bed is unfamiliar the events of the night before came rushing to her. "Janet you are no longer a virgin" she whispered to herself.

Dakota woke with a gasp. Not slowly. Not gently. Like her body had been yanked out of sleep and thrown into consciousness without warning. For a second, she did not know where she was. Her heart thundered violently inside her chest. Her breaths came sharp and too fast, like she had been running for miles in her sleep. The room spun just slightly as her eyes adjusted to the dim light filtering through the curtains. Her fingers clenched the bedsheet beneath her without realizing it.

Jenny also screamed while crying. She woke up in a panic breathing heavily and sweating profusely. She was dripping wet with sweat. She took the glass of water that was lying on the bedside table and gulped it in one go. Her heart was still beating very fast. She felt like she was going to have a heart attack.

I tried to close my eyes and shake off all those thoughts. But after hiding under the blanket for a while, I felt even more breathless. I sat up and kicked the blanket off. “Wait, maybe my heart started racing because of the cool quote Daran said earlier. Yeah, that’s it! My heart always beats fast when I hear a great line in a movie or read something exciting in a novel.” That whole night, I struggled to sleep. I don’t even remember if I actually slept or not. When my alarm went off, it felt like I hadn’t slept at all. I had to go to campus.

Curled in Colton’s arms in bed, my head laid on his chest as I listen to that steady rhythm of his heartbeat, I doze in and out of peaceful and contented slumber. Something keeps waking me when I start to fall deeply, and I can’t seem to put my finger on it. Like a dream or a feeling that’s just out of sight and seems to jump in to haul me back whenever my consciousness drifts away. An unease or a threatening nightmare maybe, it’s definitely a sense of unease and try as I might, I can’t seem to fall into blissful darkness for any length of time. It’s almost dawn and I have barely dozed for more than twenty-minute slots at a time. I’m frustrated and exhausted, yet I can’t seem to rest.
