He sat sat down in a chair, two guards at his sides keeping their hands on both his shoulders to hold him up, and to stop him from slumping downwards underneath the desk. Jasper did nothing, said nothing, and felt almost nothing. There was still that one, all too familiar knot of fear in his chest that twisted and writhed, trying to reach out and expand its clutches outside of the small area that it had claimed within Jasper, trying to make his hands shake, his legs wobble, and his eyes and irises widen. The same ball of fear had once been so powerful and strong, keeping a grip over Jasper strong enough to make him murder a man.

I couldn't keep quiet anymore. "You know what you did!" Jared raised his arm to hit me again but this time around, I ducked and he almost lost his balance but the gammas he had come along with were quick to hold him. This seemed to infuriate Jared and he glared at me with his eyes glazed. His eyes were now pale yellow and I knew he would shift anytime soon. This made me take a step back. If he shifted, then I was dead. There was no way I would be able to protect myself from his terror. There was no way I would be able to run.

It takes forever to piece back together but only seconds to destroy. Thin ribbons of fear snake bluely through me like a system of rivers. I need a cloudburst or soothing landscape fast, to still this panic. Maybe a field of dracaena, or a vast stand of sugar pines—generous, gum-yielding trees—to fill our minds with vegetable wonder and keep dread at bay. I swirl around only to see Jasper bending on his knees to peek down and throw to the cracks of the door. I approach him by asking, " What are you doing?"

I barely had time to think before they began moving toward me, their expressions darkening with suspicion. My heart thundered in my chest as I stumbled backwards, my foot catching on a root. As I fell, I caught a glimpse of what the broad man held in his hand—a gold metal jug, intricately designed, its surface gleaming even in the dim light. The sight of it sent a fresh wave of fear crashing through me. I tried to push myself up, but my body refused to cooperate, paralyzed by the fear that gripped me. They were getting closer, their footsteps crunching ominously on the forest floor. I was trapped, and they were going to catch me.
