Tonight was going to be a bloodbath. But at least it would be the last one.

“I miss you, too. Now go finish and get to bed yourself. Baby bean and I are going to eat some mac and cheese, then go finish off a pint of ice cream.” “Not exactly healthy eating.” “No, it’s tired eating,” I said with a chuckle. “Goodnight, Richard.” “Goodnight, Natasha,” he replied softly. The click indicated the call ended, then his name disappeared from the screen. I let out a sigh, my fingers running across the glass. Two more days. That was all I had to wait until I saw him again. I was a good girl and did as he requested on Thursday, and I was halfway through Friday when a deep voice pulled me from my bubble of concentration.

“Besides, I heard you guys last night.” I dropped my fork with a loud clatter.

Dinner with the family was interesting to say the least; Damien had meant to surprise the family and brought his girlfriend, Veronica, for Friday dinner. They had started to get serious and well let’s just say if after an explosive family dinner she didn’t run for the hills then she could be the one.

“How bad was I last night?” Her voice became low, somehow more distant despite the fact I could tell she hadn’t moved from her chair. “You almost died, Kira.” I sucked in a breath. Somehow, somehow, I knew. Had I wanted to die? No. I’ve never been that far gone to ever think that. But my behavior last night sang a different song. “Your brother was here all night. I sent him home as soon you stabilized.” “Were they both here?” “Justin? Yes.”
