"I knew."
"Then what the hell is it?" Catherine stared into the darkness without answering right away, and for the first time since we'd arrived, I saw something in her expression I'd never seen there before. Fear. Real fear. Not an act. Not manipulation. Just fear, plain and unguarded. She stepped backward slowly, her eyes never leaving the trees.
"You have no idea what dwells in the Shadow World."
The scraping stopped. The forest went completely silent.
Catherine looked between the two of us, and when she spoke again, her voice had gone cold.
"It would eat us all alive." Her eyes hardened. "And break every last piece of our willpower."
