They were going to catch me. Then, through the trees ahead, I saw a break in the forest. The trees ended abruptly, and beyond them was smooth ground, like a clearing. Relief flooded through me. Maybe there was a road! Maybe I could flag down a car! Or someone! I ran toward it with every last bit of energy I had left, my vision tunneling as I focused only on that opening in the trees. But as I got closer, as I finally burst out of the forest, my hope died completely.

At least I still can control water. I start running toward the familiar river hoping that I will get there before the rogues get to me.

My hope to survive is barely holding on when the fast footsteps behind me follow. I don't want to die. God, help me please. As though my silent plea is heard, a line of trucks gets close. I run fast to get to the other side and just as I do, the trucks drive past me. The air blows my clothes, sending chills down my spine as it hits the damp skin from sweat. The trucks work as a barricade between me and those men.

I prayed for freedom, for safety, for the strength to keep running. My breath came in steady bursts as determination surged through me. I didn’t know where I was going, but it didn’t matter. All I knew was that I wasn’t looking back. Not this time.
