Lucy was my guinea pig because she was the only other person in our coven who could turn into a creature. Everywhere Lucy went I was there, lurking. That's how I learned which nights she'd go to Kleery Lake. Once I had perfected the spell, I beat her to the lake and waited. And just like my vision, while Lucy stood on the embankment chanting, a giant mermaid arose from the lake. The giant mermaid turned into a black shadow and entered Lucy. Once inside her, Lucy dove into the water and jumped out a mermaid. Lucy was underneath the surface almost an hour before I got the courage to leave.

Kai set her down upon the sand just as the glowing sun blossomed in the cloudless sky behind them. “That was definitely cool,” she said, rewarding him with a quick peck on the cheek. “And very comfortable, too.” She looked out over the ocean. Twenty-five yards or so off shore, she spied Selene, Colella and Tamika bobbing in the water, waving to them. The mermaids’ long, jet black hair floated on the surface around their heads, making it look from a distance as if they were floating in small oil slicks. Leah waved back. “They can’t swim much closer to us,” she said, smiling. “So I guess we’re gonna have to get wet.”

The water was icy cold, but it had a refreshing feel to it. “I told you never to come back here! And now you bring another to my abode?” an angry silver feminine voice resounded as a figure suddenly appeared above the river. Omitirin, the mermaid, I came to the conclusion as I stared at her, awed. She looked a little short of five feet nine, with a very young face like a teenagers’, and she was naked from the waist up with perky black breasts out on full display. From her waist down was a fishtail with bluish-green scales which sparkled bright like precious stones.

Before I even had time to react, Coral was at my side. A spiral of water shot up from the lake and wrapped around her glistening tail. She floated beside me. I stared at the water, peeking over the cliff and down at the lake. The water didn't seem phased by this. Fish swam within the spiral. I looked back at her furious face with many questions, but she didn't give me time to ask any. I followed her gaze to the group of wolves, all their jaws dropped in shock. It's not every day you see one of the rarest creatures on the planet. Everyone seemed frozen at the sight of the livid mermaid, even the Luna took a shaky step back. “It’s tethered. Something or someone is anchoring it here.” I nodded, sliding the obsidian dagger across the page. “Which means we can’t just banish it. We have to cut the tether.” Mara glanced toward the flap of the tent, lowering her voice even further. “And if that tether is human…” She didn’t need to finish. We all knew the risk. “The Luna,” Nora said flatly. I shot her a warning look. “We don’t speak that aloud unless we have proof. And we won’t, unless one of us sees the mark with our own eyes.”

He remains silent, his eyes not leaving mine until he starts to laugh. “You think I will make a deal with you, Zachary? My wife is Luna, one after the moon goddess’s heart. She can give me all the cure I want in the world and you think I will settle for you? Come on man, I thought you were smarter than that. Well” he gestures to my hand where a wound is still bleeding, “you might want to check that, it’s not going to heal. But what really caught her attention was the centre of the tank, where a magical spectacle awaited. In the midst of the vibrant coral and graceful seaweed, the mermaid display was the star attraction. I could see Mackenzie’s gaze fixated, her breath catching in her throat. The mermaid was truly something out of a fairy tale. Its tail shimmering in shades of turquoise and gold, scales glistening as they caught the light. The creature’s long, flowing hair seemed to dance with the gentle currents of the water, and her voice, soft and melodic, filled the space with an ethereal quality that made it feel like we had stepped into another world. Everyone roared as they would see formidable fighters in those cages ready to go berserk. These were people who had talents— killing was one of them. "Introducing, Lylan of Pearl Seas!" the Auctioneer opened the cloth of one caged mermaid in a tank. She was just staring at the necklace and the witch was watching her just as intently. I walked over to Savannah and I placed my hand on her arm. Even the sparks that I felt didn’t cause Savannah to look at me. “What is it?” I asked. “I want that.” She said plainly, pointing at an orange opal pendant with a brass chain. “Alright. You can get whatever you want.” I said, reaching forward and grabbing the necklace off of the shelf. She took it off me immediately and it looked like she was drawn to that pendant for some reason. Something more than just liking what it looked like. Something supernatural was calling to her and she wasn’t denying it.
