I kept scrolling. "Sad Girl Emergency." "Zane." "Absolutely Not Crying." "Stop." "Rainy Day Main Character." She groaned loudly. "I hate you." "No, you don't." "I might." "You definitely don't." Unfortunately for her, she started laughing. Just a little. But it was there. And for some reason, hearing it made something tighten in my chest. Because this wasn't the laugh she gave reporters. Or board members. Or investors. This was different.

"Received, dear examiner. Does the rule still apply after work?" I stared at the screen and could not hold it in. I bent over my desk, laughing so hard my shoulders shook. The sunlight streamed through the window, bathing my desk in warmth. Work didn't seem so difficult anymore. I tucked the still-warm thermal bag into my bag and pretended everything was normal, yet the smile on my lips refused to fade. That thoughtful breakfast felt sweeter than any company perk I had ever enjoyed. All morning, my desk became like an exhibit at a zoo. Anyone passing by couldn't resist stealing a glance.

As we continued chatting, the miles between us seemed to vanish. She shared anecdotes from her day, and I found solace in the sound of her virtual laughter. I couldn't help but tease her, "You know, our photos don't do justice to your laughter. I miss hearing it in person."

“Your eggs will get cold, and I’ve made them just how you like them. I think.” I smiled. Despite mom’s badgering when either dad or I overslept, she never stayed annoyed long. Otherwise, it made it harder for her to convince us to do any errands she needed.
