If it's not my circus, not my monkey, I'm out. I've especially made it a point not to get involved with females because I know my life expectancy is short as fuck. I keep telling them it's not my fault that their horny ass friends like to moon over me and would rather spend their time trying to break into my room than play sleepover games when they have them over.

People like you only rely on parents to show how high up they are. "You're not capable of anything. You can never get good grades on your own. "The future belongs to outstanding people like us. You are nobody." I laughed, but then I kinda wanted to cry. In my previous life, I loved Aileen deeply. It was because of her words that I fell in love with her. She was my Miss Dreamy. And it was hard to get over her. But now, I wouldn't.

And, like an idiot, I had forced the issue. This will never work, I told my brain. I don't want to be with anyone, least of all a shy archaeologist. I've been alone my whole life, and that's the way it has to be. I have my own pain to deal with. I do not need anyone else. You're an idiot, my brain whispered back. Maybe she's just what you need. **

“What are you doing here by this time?” I quickly closed the book and took a step backwards, my mind searching for a perfect excuse that would fit the moment, but guess what? My mind was blank so I decided to answer with any word that would come out from my mouth. “I…was passing…but the door was slightly ajar.. I thought they might like a bedtime story, that's why I walked in.” I stammered. “It’s something my mother did for us when we were younger, so I thought I should do the same for them” Henry’s eyes softened, and he nodded slowly. At this point, I heaved a sigh of relief “I see.” He added. “They seem to enjoy it.”

"What they remember is in our hands." He walked, not with his usual hunting ferocity, but with careful steps as a man following a familiar, painful path in his mind. “I have spent my entire life building a narrative,” he began. “The narrative of Joe Brian. The orphan who conquered the world. The genius. The titan. The man who needed no one.” He stopped and looked out at the city, his reflection a ghost over the glittering skyline. “It was a useful narrative. It kept the wolves at bay. It built this.” He gestured vaguely at the room, the tower, the empire.

Though I always knew they were biased toward Felix, I never expected that I was so worthless in their eyes. After all these years, even if they didn't love me, they should at least have known me. With my personality, how could I ever do something so despicable? How could I possibly joke about life and death just for the sake of competing for attention? As they each took turns comforting Mom, she straightened up and regained her usual domineering posture. "Tomorrow morning, I'll go to the hospital myself to expose their lies. If Sean's not in the morgue, I'll break his legs myself! And that nurse will be fired."

For her, I had given up on my dream of being a pianist. Yet, the moment Wilson appeared, he turned everything I had ever done into one big joke. When I didn't reply, the doctor went on, "Mr. Chance, it's best if you have family around to support you when undergoing chemotherapy. Does your wife know about this?" Raising my head to lock eyes with him, I answered calmly, "My love is dead." One hour later, I stumbled my way out of the hospital using the walls as support. Once some color had returned to my ghastly pale face, I took out my phone to call my younger brother's caretaker.

Leaning on the wall in his office, he looked out at the busy city below. I’m Ethan… I’m likely the most stupid man of all time. It became a painful saying that stayed in his thoughts and wouldn’t go away. Why? Because I married a person I didn’t love and knew she was a stupid woman.
