I nod and look around. “Where is the book?” I ask. She wasn’t carrying anything when she entered the room. “I always carry it with me, you just can’t see it,” Shanna explains. She mutters a couple of strange words, holds out her hand, and a book appears and falls onto it. The cover is fine leather engraved with a vine-like design that swirls around the edges of a large picture. The picture depicts a woman standing with her arms stretched up above her head. Above her, there are stars in the sky and I swear I see one twinkle. Shanna opens to the first page and I am stunned to see a spell.

I picked up the letter and read the gibberish the best I could. “aperi hoc buxum,” I whispered. The box started heating up and I dropped it. It accidentally hit my left foot. It was so painful I fell on the floor. The box shimmered even more and it started ascending three feet in the air. I crawled away from it to the corner of my room. I watched it go two feet higher and get brighter. I closed my eyes, thinking it’s going to blow up. Eventually, I heard a loud thump. I opened my eyes and the box is on the floor. I got up and approached it slowly. The box was open. I dipped my hand in and reached for the content of the box. It looked like a gem, a red gem.

Without a second thought, she tucked the book beneath her arm, grabbed the candle, and hurried back to the cellar stairs. Lyda could not get out of there fast enough. After carefully shutting the cellar door, she headed back toward the kitchen and set the book and candle down on the island in the center. Then I noticed the cover of the book, it has a hole round shape in it and an anchor then ship wheel in it. I look at the three objects in my hand and the book. I put two and two together and realized something. I connected the dots and placed the three objects into the holes in the cover of the book. I was almost blinded when it shined so bright. I let out a surprise gasp when the book floated and automatically flipped the pages. It stopped at one page. The book slowly landed back down on the bed. I let out a deep breath and decided to read what the book was showing me.

She had two lights diagonally positioned in the room and now Martin had broken one. Martin examined the black thing which looked like broken pieces of metal. He frowned wondering why a lightbulb would have some broken pieces of metal inside it. The strange thing about the metal too, is that it looked burnt.
