Talia's POV The Starlight Pack is throwing a party for us. This action lifted my eyebrows. Lanterns swing from above the trees, filling the lawn with bright light. Long tables are loaded with delicious cuisine-roasted meats, hot bread, and fruits that look almost too good to be true. A bonfire pops in the middle; fire kindles up into midnight while wolves from the Starlight Pack and the Misfits stick together. It's like a dream. I used to get teased, overlooked and turned away here. Now? Everyone's pushing and trying to sneak a peek at me.

Gina shut the door, a seductive smile on her lips as she trailed Joe to the bed, straddling him, her average gait perfect against his own athletic frame. Jess was with her rebound, making the best of her broken heart, Ruby made the best of the one more hour she had before she needed to get home while Gina made the best of her time away from her empty, lonely home while Rose danced her heart out with the few friends who came along. Around the fire, Year Twelve huddled like a small tribe at the edge of the world: Nick, Rachel, Tony, Prue, Tina, Bob, Jasmine, Con, Toni, Nathan. Beers sweated in sand. The girls passed a cheap bottle of red; a joint pinwheeled through the inner circle, glowing like a firefly on every second inhale.

Jack turned his flashlight on the kids. Four boys squinted at him, one familiar, the one he’d caught on Ashley’s land. The kid recognized him too and hunched down in his jacket. They were all around high school age, red-cheeked and wide-eyed, half scared, half excited. “What are you doing here?” “Just hanging out,” the one who’d challenged him a second ago answered, sounding defensive, probably the gang leader. “The bones are over there.” He pointed to a stand of bushes.

They were looking at our faces and at the way we walked and at the nervous energy crackling between us like static electricity. The roller rink was called Starlite Skate. It smelled like popcorn and feet. The carpet was a pattern straight out of 1992. Purple and teal swirls that hurt to look at. A teenager with a nose ring sat behind the counter scrolling through her phone. She did not even glance up when we walked in. "Three," Bianca said. The teenager grunted and pointed at a rack of skates. "Sign the waiver." We signed the waiver and laced up our skates. The leather was worn soft. The wheels were scuffed from a thousand trips around the rink.
