"Then let's split up. We find it before curfew."
The library swallowed us whole, its shelves stretching up into shadow, the air thick with dust and old parchment. I went left, toward the wolf-lore section, scanning spine after spine with fingers that wouldn't stop shaking. Nothing. I moved deeper, aisle after aisle, the silence pressing against my ears until it felt like its own kind of noise.
Then I saw it — a corner where the light didn't reach. A place the other students seemed to avoid without ever saying why, tucked behind the last row of shelves like something forgotten on purpose.
