Lost Words: Beyond The Page Novels & Stories

I gently closed the newspaper and threw it into the blazing fireplace in front of me. The tongues of fire instantly swallowed the paper, swallowing that name and that past soaked in blood and betrayal. "Nothing." I took a sip of coffee, warmth spreading through my body. The same book I had tried to read before, the one with blank pages. "The Luna's Gift: Understanding Your True Power," Beatrice read from the cover. "Your mother left this for you specifically." "I tried reading it before," I said. "The pages were blank." "Because you weren't ready to see what was written there," Beatrice said, bringing it to me. "But perhaps now..." I took the book with trembling hands and opened it. This time, words appeared on the pages, coming into existence like they had been waiting for this exact moment.

“Riley. If you do this, I might lose you. I might not be able to find my way back to your soul.” I leaned in, pressing my forehead to his. For a moment—just one—I let myself breathe him in. No magic. No destiny. Just a man who had loved me poorly and a woman who was about to burn the world down to save her friend. “You already lost me,” I whispered, “the moment the Ledger decided I was legible. Now, let's see if they can read me when I'm invisible.” Behind us, the tunnel screamed as something tore its way into existence—thousands of pages turning at once, ink bleeding through the stone.

“She will carry the flame of rebirth, but only if she does not burn. Trials shall test her soul, and loss will carve her path.” I stared at that line. Loss. The word echoed. "Don’t spiral," Zerina warned gently. "It doesn’t mean what you think it does." I swallowed. "I know. But… it could." I turned the page. There was a drawing now. Not of a wolf or a goddess this time, but of a mountain with twin peaks and a river flowing between them. Beneath it were words scrawled in the same fluid, ancient script: “Where blood met moonlight and silence was sworn, she will find what was taken.”

I thought for a moment and eventually flipped the first page of the book open. A diagram showing a Pentagram was inscribed on the first page, and what became rather much creepier was the realization that it was glowing. I flipped to the next page and found words scattered across the book. They didn't make any sense despite being written in English; I couldn't find any meaningful insight from the wording. Almost giving up on the book, my eyes caught a piece of paper on the next page, and I flipped it open to find a sentence written on it. 'Only way to become an adept of the book of shadows is to learn the art of reading backwards.'

Then: “You forgot.” “He made you forget.” “Do not say his name aloud.” We stared. “What does it mean?” Nyx whispered. Mia flipped the page. More ink appeared: “The Seventh is not made of what you are.” “The Seventh is made of what you lost.” Nyx’s POV I reached for the book. But as soon as I touched it— Gone. The pedestal was empty. The ink vanished. The pages unwrote themselves. And I didn’t remember why we were in the library.

They waited to see what’s gonna happen. “See, nothing happened. I told you guys it was just a fearless game” she said. “Yeah, it’s still creepy to me. It came all the way from the water and it’s f*cking dry inside. How is that even possible?” One of the girls yelled and stood up. She was packing her things. She wanted to leave as soon as possible. “Hold on, I thought we would spend the night here?” Emma asked. “Not anymore. Haven’t you seen in movies and books when some teenagers uncover some hidden truth behind a book or break a spell? I don’t want that to happen to me. I’m leaving, who’s coming with me?”

I said like a whisper, though I know he won't hear me. My vision then gets so blurry with everything spinning around me, and in just a few seconds my consciousness is starting to fade away and I finally closed my eyes letting the darkness engulf me.
