Vlad raised an eyebrow as he caught the title: The Night That Devoured the Heart. A vampire romance written by a human in the nineteenth century. “Since when did you become a romantic?” Vlad asked, his tone dripping with irony. Lucian closed the book, stared at the cover for a moment, and let out a deep sigh. “I thought I was going to have to give you a good correction these days,” Vlad continued, crossing his arms. The ruby ring on his finger caught the faint firelight. “You seemed possessed. But it appears you’ve resolved your internal crisis on your own. You’re calmer. That tells me the human is no longer in immediate danger from you.”

Instead, blood spilled from his mouth. Lucian finally restrained part of his aura slightly. Ragnar gasped heavily before glaring hatefully at him. “I am tired,” he spat weakly. “Tired of kneeling beneath Lycans.” Hatred filled his bloodshot eyes. “The strongest wolves should rule.” Silence filled the hall briefly. Then suddenly, Lucian smiled. His smile was beautiful. Anyone else would have been captivated by it if not for the terrifying look inside his mismatched eyes. In less than a second, he vanished from the chair.

His shouts and his yells, his cries and his pleas meant nothing to Richard.
