he snarled suddenly, and the circling birds screeched as they caught alight, burning with such ferocity that their feathers turned to ash, and all that remained was smoke and the slow fall of black dust.
“Poor birds,” I sighed.
He laughed. “Not real birds, Siorin,” he told me. “Spell constructs or familiars.”
“That’s how you always know when they are there,” I realised. “You can feel the magic.”
“Yes,” he caught me against him and kissed me, his lips flavoured by the smooth, mineral taste of the water and cool to the touch, briefly reminding me of the merman I had left behind in the ocean before they heated. His tongue sought mine and stroked it.
