Raoní e Zaltana são gêmeos não idênticos. Entretanto, na cultura de sua tribo Kanaparís1, uma das crianças terá que morrer pois uma delas representaria o mal. Mas, devido ao missionário Edberto Fonseca, que iniciava o seu trabalho de evangelização na tribo, uma das crianças foi sequestrada por ele e, por ironia do destino, acabou sendo criada pela tribo dos Oniakês1 que são inimigos declarados dos Kanaparís. Eles crescem sem ter contato um com o outro. Mas devido ao ataque da tribo dos Oniakês, Zaltana acaba ferindo gravemente a mulher de Raoní, Thaynara. Ao ver o prenúncio da morte de sua esposa, Raoní mata Zaltana. Contudo, nem isso faz com que Raoní ficasse bem. Um pajé procura Raoní e diz que pode ter uma chance dele impedir a morte de sua esposa. Ele deve procurar um certo homem que lhe mostrará como entrar no portal dos mortos e resgatar o espírito de sua amada. Raoní então recebe a ajuda do seu fiel amigo Dacota e partem para um mundo desconhecido.
