“Good,” I said, a dangerous smile tugging at my mouth. “Let him fight. The harder he pushes, the clearer it’ll be where her loyalty lies.”
Chase shook his head but didn’t argue further. He stood, gave me a sharp nod, and left.
When the door clicked shut, the room felt suffocatingly quiet again.
I leaned back in the chair, staring at the ceiling. My pulse was still racing, images replaying in my mind: her wide eyes when she sat, the quickening of her heartbeat, the way her breath caught.
