It was the silence that followed the cannon fire. ​“Cassian, look out!” Winnie cried. ​I spun just in time to see a mechanical monstrosity crashing through a glass storefront. It was a ‘Clockwork Hound’—a terrifying blend of brass gears and biological components, its eyes glowing with a red, artificial light. It lunged at me, its steel jaws snapping with enough force to crush a boulder. ​I didn’t move. I let the shadow take me.

His voice was right behind me. I spun around. I saw Silas standing five feet away. He held a silver pistol. I raised my gun to shoot, but I stopped. I saw three versions of him. One to the left. One to the right. One in the center. They all looked real. They all moved at the same time. "Which one is the real monster?" Silas laughed. Sera raised her gun. She was looking at the one in the center. Her finger was on the trigger.

His reaction was immediate… and priceless. His brows shot up, the color draining slightly from his face. “Whoa,” he said warily. “Now you’re scaring me with that weird smile.” He squinted at me. “Just tell me what it is.” Laughing under my breath, I gave him a playful wink. “I’m not a serial killer, honey.” Taking his hand, I tugged him gently toward the door. “Follow me fearlessly.” … The forest breathed around us, silvered by the full moon. Pale light spilled through the canopy, turning leaves into shards of glass and shadows into quiet witnesses.

Sean and Kyle, two of Burney's friends, even Big Jim walked past. I sighed as I pushed on, heading for Aaron's room. I walked through his curtain and paused, startled by the reflections before me. One was sitting at the table in the corner, his back to me as he poured over a pile of papers. Another was half the height he should've been, kneeling beside the bed. And the other... "Lillith." I said her name without thinking, and the next second she was with me, her body appearing before me, looking as tangible as if she were actually standing there.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Then suddenly— a violent pulse exploded from my body. Every remaining light shattered. Windows cracked. Council guards were thrown backward. And for one terrifying second— a massive shadow appeared behind me on the wall. Not small. Not weak. Not omega. A monster. Silas stared at it in stunned silence. Then whispered— “Moon Goddess…”

More like three voices in one. Hera chuckles behind us. "There he is. The monster hidden under his fake civility." I can't breathe. I've never seen him look so terrifying. Hera sashays to her red car, and I panic. "Wait, what are you doing?! Take him with you!" I say, my voice shaky. "You should tame your monster first. He looks like he's about to riot," she responds, and I glance at Tyler's unmoving form. A small pool of blood is forming under him.
