I felt a flutter in my chest and quickly stepped back, clearing my mind.
The instructor’s whistle blew sharply, signaling the start of the training. I moved quickly, dodging low branches, leaping over fallen logs, my focus entirely on keeping pace. Isaac followed closely behind me, his steady presence oddly reassuring.
“Slow down!” he called out. “You’re going too fast.”
“I can handle it,” I said over my shoulder, determined. I pushed harder, my feet skidding slightly on the damp grass.
My focus slipped for just a second, and then my foot hit a slick patch. I lost my balance, sliding down a small slope, and ended up tumbling into a pile of rocks.
