Her body started to transform, turning into an inhuman monster that was described by rumors as the “Mist Creeper” a being that could not be defeated with just blade and magic. The Mist Creeper was notorious for devouring adventurers and removing their sanity. But it was supposedly only rumors told by adventurers to look better or to give themselves something to boast about, up until they saw the real thing. “IT’S JUST I HAD a different book in mind when ink spilled on this one, plus what’s left to do in a finished book?” They, of course, ignored me Completely probably deciding if I would not explain, they were just going to proceed. One of the three waved their hand above the inky darkness we were standing on, and instantly a book on a pedestal was in front of them on the floor. It showed off my title, ‘1001 Dark Tales’. I instantly held my breath, hoping they didn’t realize what that meant. But if they had, they said nothing. Instead, they just started flipping through the pages of the book, looking for which store to choose.

“What do you mean Eirik?” He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming all of my senses. “There are things in this town—things most people don’t believe in. They're hidden in plain sight.” I swallowed hard, stuttering. “Lik–like what?” “Like the legends of this land,” he said quietly, gazing intensely. “Old stories about creatures that roam these woods.” “Creatures?” I scoffed, trying to hide my growing anxiety with humor. “What, like ghosts, ghouls and goblins? Those are just dumb stories, Eirik.” I laughed nervously.

I look at it, heart hammering away inside my chest. The mess of ink on the white paper reminds me of the monster that lurks in Nana and Papa’s basement, the one that tried to get Abby and Scott to go downstairs with it.

It was late autumn when they arrived — the trees skeletal, the air thick with a kind of oppressive stillness that seemed to hum beneath the surface of the world. Emily Carter, a graduate student in folklore and urban legends, had heard the whispers about WildWood all her life. She had grown up just a few towns over and had spent years gathering the old stories: tales of the “vanishing patients,” the “howling trees,” and the “night doctors” said to stalk the forest paths. Determined to separate fact from myth, Emily organized an expedition for her thesis, enlisting a few brave companions:

My aunt would laugh because she said that I was a different breed than most. The minute I heard about them, I buried my head deeper into books with excitement. Little did she know I also discovered Daddy’s old box in the attic, and ‘The World of the Unknown’ was in it.
