Like two trapped beasts stripped of their fangs, they had nothing left except a final, mournful struggle.
One after the other, they walked into the apartment building, and the elevator rose in silence. Standing outside Morgan’s door, Dean slowly lifted his heavy hand and pressed the doorbell. The door opened to Morgan standing inside, dressed in comfortable loungewear, a book still open in her hand as if she had been reading. Warm yellow light spilled out behind her, outlining a figure that was calm and emotionally distant.
When she saw the two men outside, soaked and wretched, she did not look surprised or disgusted. Her gaze was flat, as if she were looking at two unfamiliar deliverymen.
