TAE “Fuck.” I jerk my hand back just before the parrot beaks my skin. I almost laugh at how silly it is that Ronan owns a pet, and a parrot at that. My phone chimes again, reminding me that it’s been twenty minutes since I snuck into Ronan’s room.

It was the Armitage pack house, and we were home. There wasn’t anyone around, and it was nearly silent: no howling, shouts, alarms going off, or anything, even though the Armitage pack council had to be chewing their own claws off by now, with no word from Matthew or Ian. The only sound was the squawking and hooting of an unusually annoying owl in the cluster of pines to our left. “Ian,” I said quietly, “this is why you need wards. The owl’s the only one who noticed a powerful sorcerer and a master vampire just materialized inside your territory carrying the unconscious pack leader like a sack of potatoes.”

Melvina paced back and forth in front of her friend's hut-like house which was located at the outskirts of her pack, as she waited for her friend which was a witch to come out and meet her, and to fill her in on the outcome of her quest. She had gotten a message from her infamous owl as she was preparing breakfast for her family that morning. The owl had perched on her window pane, before opening her beak, to let out the paper which her lady friend must have put in there.

But something happened, and it felt like I became more of the person I was supposed to be. Again I think about the mark, and I look at Jacob’s beck where I bit him. There is a mark looking fully formed, on his neck. It shows two wolves sitting howling at the moon, the big one is black, and the smaller one is almost white with a hint of ice blue. Above them is a moon the same color as the smaller wolf, and all around them, a shade or glow of blue shades. It is beautiful, and I can’t stop looking at it. I remember he told me the one on me would look the same. I carefully get out of bed and look around and now I look at the room I am in, and I am shocked.

I grab the box and dart outside. “Now what” I asked. “Inside there should be a potion” she said “give it to him.” I look through the contents of the box, crystals, a rabbit leg and finally a vile with a purple liquid inside. “That’s the one” she said. I pop the lid off and pour it in Liam’s mouth; he starts to cough. The wounds on his body begin to heal and Liam opens his eyes. “Oh thank god you’re alright” I hugged him. “Ouch” he groaned.

He made a sound at the back of his throat and I assumed he nodded too. “Yes, I remember.” He said with an eye too, I’m sure. “So, anything off with you?” “No, I’m fine—“ I paused, recalling what I’d noticed in the bathroom this morning. Before I could speak, Owen beat me to it. “Good, because they said they all noticed claw marks on their back. And well, many of them can’t stand on their feet as we’re talking right now.”

She lifts her hand, tilting it so moonlight spills across the soft skin of her wrist— And suddenly silver glows beneath it. Not a tattoo. Not magic. Not something artificial. A mark. Moon-bright. Alive. My breath leaves me in a quiet, stunned exhale. “A moon-mark,” I whisper. She nods, jaw tightening as if bracing for disappointment. “Since you’re my mate, you have a right to know. I got my wolf early—way early. And she’s powerful. People say moon-marked wolves are rare but…” She swallows. “Some think rare means dangerous.”

I had seen him shirtless enough to know that there was no mark over his head. He hadn’t met his mate yet. My jaw trembled and I almost clicked out, but my eye caught on the little arrow telling me that there was another page to the attachment he sent me. One moon before the wolf’s twentieth birthday, shall these marks begin to appear and be honored and cherished. My heart lurched. Can you get me the rest of this book? I don’t think that’s a good idea. I bared my teeth. Why not? It’s important. It could be a breakthrough in my investigation.

“The owl?” “No. The message.” She hesitated. “The Moon Goddess doesn’t always speak in riddles… but when she does, it’s usually right before something terrible happens.” I chuckled bitterly. “Comforting.” We sat there for what felt like hours, watching the red sky. Then came a sudden crackle—twigs snapping under fast-moving feet. Orion emerged from the trees, wide-eyed and breathless, his shirt torn at the collar and his arm bloodied. “We’ve got a problem,” he panted.

When she couldn’t see his back anymore, she offered a tiny wave at her beautiful home and started her journey to the Dark Shadow Pack. She heard the same sound she heard last night inside her father’s bedroom, she followed it keenly and was surprised to see an owl staring at her immensely, the owl flew in front of her, stopped, and lowered itself down. Alpha Ciandra couldn’t help but smile, “the birds love me.”
