Wishing they'd packed me a mirror, I felt around on my face with gentle fingers. The middle of my nose was tender and brought immediate tears to my eyes when I even grazed it. I blinked through the gathering liquid and took a couple of quick breaths. With a prayer that I was doing this right, I smashed my thumbs against the bumpy part right in the middle.

I was startled by the sudden noise. Only then did I touch my ears. The blood had already dried and some red scabs came off. The touch brought back a twinge of pain to my ears. My ears were bleeding and I didn’t even notice. Jane patted my hand. "Why are you so stubborn? Doesn't it hurt?" With that, she took out an iodine cotton swab from her bag, tied my hair up, and carefully disinfected my ears. "How did this happen?"

“Ugh!” Not seeing it coming, I fail to dodge it. I feel my left eye hit by the snow globe even when I shut my eyes. I hear the snow globe fall to the floor and crash into pieces. It takes me just a second to feel the pain spreading from my zygomatic bone to my nose and my forehead. When I open my eyes again, I see the blood trickling down my cheek and dripping over the glass shards on the floor. The office falls to silence. We become so quiet that I can almost hear the sound of my blood dripping.

A chunk of brick exploded near my ear, spraying grit into my hair. I didn’t wait for a second one. I bolted.

He sneers at me, then aims the gun once more in my brother’s direction. I ran to them, skidding to a halt, wrapping my arms around them, acting as a shield of sorts, just as the gun goes off. I felt the jeering impact of the gun reverberated through my body. A deafening ringing penetrates, then silence. It was then I realized the blast had ruptured my right eardrum, considering how loud it sounded. Blood trailed onto my shoulder from my ear. My left ear seemed fine, though I could definitely hear the boys screaming my name at the top of their lungs. That was a good sign, I guess.

The cuts from the shattered glass had been treated with ointment, leaving her cheek feeling cool rather than burning with pain. She didn't need to guess who had done it. Winter sat on the bed in a daze, but the growing pain in her ear and the feverish heat spreading through her body snapped her back to reality. She immediately remembered what the doctor had warned her only a few days earlier. “If you experience severe ear pain accompanied by a fever, come to the hospital immediately. A perforated eardrum combined with an infection is no small matter. It can seriously affect your hearing if left untreated. You must take this seriously.”

Maya asked again, her voice finally becoming clearer through the ringing. I swallowed hard and nodded weakly. “I’m okay,” I managed to say hoarsely. At least I thought I was, my body felt like it had been hit by a tsunami. Lila suddenly gasped in horror. “Your ears—” I frowned. “What?” “There’s blood.” My stomach twisted as I lifted shaky fingers toward my ear and felt warm liquid coating my hand instantly. I groaned softly as more ringing stabbed painfully through my head. The explosion had almost been too close.
