I swear, it was so loud my eardrums must’ve burst—judging by the blood drying on my neck when I wake up, slumped over, with Pop holding my head between his hands.
“Holy shit!” Ma exclaims, dropping into a shaky hug. “Don’t you ever do that to me again!”
“What happened?” I ask groggily, blinking through a haze.
“When she screamed after you stabbed her,” Pop says, voice tight, “you passed out. Her shriek caused some internal hemorrhaging—you were too close when it happened.”
“Why’d she scream like that?” I ask, shaking my head, trying to knock the fog out of my brain. It’s like waking from a nightmare only to find yourself still in it.
