I reply, my heart racing. The doctor’s demeanor shifts, a spark of excitement glimmering in his eyes. "There’s no reason to worry. Look, here are the twins… both girls, by the way. They’re slightly on the small side, but that's completely normal for triplets. And look here, both their hearts are beating perfectly." He points at the screen, and I find myself leaning in closer, captivated by the tiny flickers of life.

I could hardly believe it—a zombie with a heartbeat. Magnus' pale gray eyes had softened, his whole being shifting closer to that of a living man. But deep down, I knew the truth. A zombie was still a zombie. No matter how many emotions or human traits he seemed to possess, his brain had long been dead. After I came into his life, Magnus rarely left my side. He seldom went out, always staying close to me.

The doctor looked at her again with full attention. He drew his chair closer to Anna. "What you have inside your chest... is not a human heart. "Anna's fingers curled slightly. Anna was in disbelief. "I don't understand," she said slowly. The doctor walked to where the screen was and pointed at the scan. "This is not organic," he explained. "It is mechanical. Artificial. Anna continued to look at the image but she refused to believe what the doctor had said. "It is not possible," she said.

And as their agent whispered into a secure channel, voice low and venomous: “Phase three begins. They will fall. One way or another.” The game had only just begun.

We dropped the last few feet onto a floor of solid ice, and the heart was there. It was larger than I had imagined. The size of a wagon did not capture it. This was the size of a house, a massive organ suspended in the center of a chamber carved from the beast's own fossilized ribs. Its surface was translucent, glowing from within with that pale gold and deep blue light. Veins connected it to the walls, pulsing with each beat. The sound was deafening this close, a thunderous boom that vibrated through my bones. The frost in my core erupted.

She was just staring blankly at the Doctor while blinking her eyes from time to time as if confirming that this isn’t a dream. “Kiara?” My body became cold as my hands starts to tremble while waiting for her or the doctor to say anything. “Systolic. The left ventricle of the heart, which pumps most of the blood, has become weaker. This happens because it’s gotten bigger. Since it is larger than before, the ventricle can’t contract the way it should. Because of that, your heart doesn’t pump with enough force to push blood throughout the body.” Kiara explained.
