Man, I’ve read a bunch of these, and they all seem to treat the school setting like a playground for power fantasies rather than something real. The author dumps Naruto into Kuoh Academy and all of a sudden he’s curbstomping stray devils with a Rasengan on the first day. The school part is just set dressing for fights and harem antics. I remember one where he literally beat up Riser Phenex in the middle of a class debate. It’s fun for what it is, but they rarely capture that awkward, boring, or genuinely social side of school. Like, does anyone ever do homework? Does Naruto struggle with DxD’s demonic history lessons? Not really. The school life theme gets reduced to club activities being combat training and school festivals being interrupted by supernatural crises.

That said, the rare ones that get it right are a treat. I stumbled on a slow-burn fic once where post-war Naruto, dealing with all his trauma, is trying to be a normal exchange student. The focus was on his inability to relate to normal teenage problems, like Issei’s perversion or Sona’s student council perfectionism. The school setting actually mattered—it was a place of forced normalcy that highlighted how alien he was. The story used classroom dynamics, group projects, and even something as simple as lunchroom seating to explore isolation. It wasn’t about power levels; it was about a soldier trying to be a kid in a world where everyone else is also secretly a soldier. Those fics are diamonds in the rough, but they prove the school theme can be more than a backdrop for crossover fights.
