Mood boards and music playlists are my secret weapon. I collect images, snippets, and songs that evoke the feeling I want the story to have. The plot points emerge from trying to navigate from one emotional 'scene' to the next. It’s a vibe-first approach.

Logic comes later. If a scene doesn’t contribute to the overarching emotional arc, it gets cut, no matter how clever the plot twist is.

Planning a novel can feel overwhelming, but I’ve found that breaking it down into smaller steps makes it manageable. I start by jotting down the core idea—what’s the heart of the story? Is it a romance, a mystery, or something else? Then, I brainstorm the main characters, giving them flaws and goals to make them feel real. I don’t worry about perfection at this stage; it’s all about getting ideas on paper. Next, I outline the major plot points, like the inciting incident, midpoint twist, and climax. I keep it flexible because inspiration often strikes mid-writing. Finally, I set a loose writing schedule, aiming for consistency over word count. The key is to stay excited about the story—if I’m bored, readers will be too.

The most useful tool I ever picked up was scene cards. Not a fancy app, just index cards on my kitchen table. I write a one-line summary of every planned scene—just the character's goal and the conflict—and physically lay them out. Seeing the whole story's shape lets me spot where the tension dips for too long, or where two similar 'talking' scenes are back-to-back.

It sounds basic, but this physicality stops me from getting lost in prose. The plot's skeleton has to hold weight before I worry about muscle and skin. A boring middle usually means I didn't give the protagonist a clear, escalating series of obstacles to their central desire. Now I ask of every chapter: whose goal is advanced or thwarted here?

I learned this the hard way after my first draft had a forty-page lull where the main character just...thought about stuff. Painful but educational.
