The air smelled like her now—dried lavender hung in bunches from the eaves, mingling with the humid southern air and scent of Alabama Pines. The match hissed to life, its sulfur bite cutting through the muggy air. Somewhere in the weeds, a wind chime made of shotgun shells clinked—Dragon’s old project, half-rusted. They’d put down roots here, deeper than I’d realized.

“Apparently, some guys have been breaking into people's home and stealing from them. So I was just trying to be careful; I didn't want mine to be next.” “Wait a minute,” he said, taking a moment to sweep his eyes all over the place before returning his attention to me. “I thought New Orleans was the safest place to be. What happened?” “It was, but not anymore.” I said, shaking my head. “Besides, are you going to stand out there or will you come in?” He lifted his gaze and glanced at the door frame before taking a step in. It’s hard to describe, it’s something you must experience for yourself to truly understand. The story I’m going to tell you begins in New Orleans, on a warm summer evening, many, many years ago. The sun had just set, leaving the sky a luminous blue that only tropic skies ever become. There was a warm breeze blowing in off the river – there usually was – but those breezes didn’t typically reach very far into the Quarter. And in Jackson Square the air was humid and heavy; the floral notes of Queen’s Wreath mingling with the scent of the paints used by the numerous artists that set up along the sidewalks.

Once that happened, mom sheltered me for the rest of my teen years.

It was probably that, or I was still remembering that movie, The Originals. I watched it when I was like 16, it had a lot of vampirism and witchcraft. It was all centered In New Orleans, so pardon if my thoughts went far.

After getting home and taking a long shower with Rose, the only thing I could do was lie down and stare at the ceiling in my room, imagining how everything would happen from then on. I kept quiet, wondering what exactly I was going to say. Because more and more the whole scenario he described came to life in my mind, and every second I found it more enjoyable. "But? "New Orleans is a nice city. We could live near each other and... I can see you owning a gallery," I commented.
