He looked like he wanted to speak, to plead, but the words caught in his throat.
“You think you’re the hero?” Nyxara’s voice cut through the heavy silence, sharp as broken glass. Her eyes, bright violet, glared at him with a pain that was almost physical. “You were never more than a joke to them. A prop. A leash they tied around my neck and pretended it was love.”
Kael’s voice, all ice and razor edges, slid in after hers. “He’s nothing, Nyx. Don’t waste your power on yesterday’s mistake. He’s a dead plan, not worth a drop of your fury.”
