Julian was absolutely terrified and swung the kitchen knife wildly, hacking at the zombie's head. But long-term starvation had left him slow and weak. The slash missed the zombie's head and landed on its shoulder instead. With a crack, the rusty kitchen knife sank deep into the gap near the zombie's collarbone and stuck there.

[Juliet's POV] The music at the celebration party continued. Surrounded by a crowd, Alison basked in the crowd's repetitive praises. Suddenly, a deafening boom came from the city walls. Overlapping growls and roars of zombies tore through the atmosphere. Terror erupted instantaneously. People in the crowd screamed, "It's a swarm of zombies! A massive swarm of zombies!" A guard ran over, staggering along the way. "The lightning barrier on the right of the base has been breached. There's a massive gap. Zombies are coming through soon!"

My eyes rolled back. "Mm," I moaned. I felt every press of his fingers. It sent chills through my veins. A smile tugged across my lips. The next moment, I snapped out of it. I jumped off the bronze chair and turned swiftly to look into his eyes. Those blue piercing eyes were gone, replaced by deep crimson ones. "You aren't Mitchel," I said, trying to convince myself that everything he said was fake. "No matter what you think, I will remain Zarchios," he said.

And yet only a short time later, even explosives were becoming ineffective against them. My fears had been right all along. The zombies were evolving. The pile of bodies grew higher and higher until one zombie finally managed to grab hold of the very top of the wall. I immediately aimed at its head and pulled the trigger cleanly. But killing one meant nothing. More and more zombies climbed over the bodies beneath them, using the grotesque tower of flesh as a ladder. No matter how fast we fired, we still couldn’t keep up with the endless wave surging toward us. I didn’t even have time to wonder whether this would be the day I died.

Their eyes were empty, unfocused, and they were both wearing a strange, hollow smile. The rescue team leader stepped forward. "Mr. Sands? Mrs. Sands?" Dad suddenly clutched the tin of spam against his chest and shrank backward, his eyes wide. "Shh. Be quiet," he whispered, his voice shaking. "There are zombies out there. Going outside means death. "This is the last of our food. We have to ration it. We have to make it last." Mom nodded along beside him, completely serious. "One less mouth to feed. You'll get to live a few more days."

"Maybe I'll collect some long-due interest too." The convoy raced through the ruins. Iris led the team personally, which consisted of twenty elite superpowered soldiers who were all heavily armed. I sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, watching the crumbling ruins fly by outside the window. Ever since the gray-white streaks had disappeared, my vision had become incredibly sharp. I could see maggots in the eye sockets of a zombie 300 yards away, and weeds growing in the cracks of the ruins. I could even see the rising black smoke in the distance.

This time there is no vision and I sigh in relief, but Ryan is in danger, and I have to find him. I slowly sit up and Caleb looks at me, “Thank you, Maddie.” I nod but I need more information. I need to know where the Zobs came from. “Caleb, where do Zobs come from?” I ask. He looks at Lila and then me, “Well, remember we were talking about lone-wolfs, we believe they are them. Only they are kicked from their packs for the worst reasons-like murder assault and betrayal. So, they find each other in the wild and become a zombie pack essentially.

The infected weren’t the only threat anymore. That much had become clear over the past few weeks. It wasn’t just the shambling hordes of zombies that kept me awake at night, but the survivors—the desperate ones, the ones who had lost too much, the ones who saw others as nothing more than resources to take.
