My Best Friend's Father
My heart nearly stops at that voice.
“She just woke up,” Tes replies, sliding off the bed. I look at Tes—he nods, smiling—as I turn to the man in the wheelchair rolling toward us. His face is scarred with burns, but I’d know my father anywhere. Tears spill as he smiles at me. I shuffle upright, heart pounding, then ease off the bed and hobble to him.
“Daddy,” I sob, throwing my arms around him.
His face crumples with emotion as he hugs me back. He smells just like I remember. My heart swells, overwhelmed.
