There were no piles of gold bars or stacks of cash—just rows of old steel filing cabinets, crates of ledgers, and boxes marked with red wax seals.
“This is where my father kept everything,” Liam said. “Business records, bribes, deals, favors. He believed in insurance. He believed in having dirt on everyone—especially his allies.”
I stepped forward, scanning the labels.
“Which one is it?”
“Middle row. Drawer 4C. Look for a black ledger with a silver cis laps.”
I found the drawer and yanked it open. Inside were journals, receipts, and envelopes. My fingers shook as I sifted through them until I saw it—a black book, scuffed at the corners, with a silver lock gleaming against the dim light.
